Ciaran Cannon was elected to Galway County Council in June 2004, to represent the Loughrea Electoral Area. Later he was  selected by the party to contest the General Election, standing in Galway East.  Following the 2007 General Election he was nominated to Seanad Eireann by An Taoiseach.

Career to date:

 

  • 1987 – 1990: Administration - Planning Department, Dublin Co. Co.
  • 1990 – 2000: Administration – Planning & Environment Departments, Galway Co. Co.
  • 2000 – 2002: National Administrator – The Irish Pilgrimage Trust, Clarenbridge
  • 2002 – present: Chief Executive, The Irish Pilgrimage Trust The Irish Pilgrimage Trust is a national charity caring for children and young people with disabilities.

 

Community involvement:

 

  • Chairman, Carrabane Community Council
  • Member of B.O.M., Carrabane N.S.
  • Scout Leader, Carrabane Scout Unit
  • Chosen as one of the Galway People of the Year in March, 2002

Achievements to date:

 

Ciaran is the chair of the Planning & Strategic Policy Committee of Galway County Council and he has a strong interest in rural planning.  

 

He has been instrumental in ensuring many improvements at a local level in the Loughrea electoral area.  Following his election both Ciaran and Cllr. Mogie Maher (Loughrea Town Council) went back to the doorsteps and asked the people, as newly elected Councillors, what they could do for them. 

 

Ciaran and Mogie now issue regular newsletters updating the electorate on the progress of these issues.

 

Ciaran recently secured €6.3m in funding for St. Brendans Nursing Home in Loughrea. This followed a visit by the then An Tánaiste, Michael McDowell to St. Brendans in February.

 

Ciaran was a key figure in ensuring that the Portumna Community Childcare Group received €1.3m in funding under the Equal Opportunities Childcare programme.
