Reopening of Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane


After 2 years of major renovations, The Hugh Lane Gallery reopened to the public on 5th May. The extension has doubled the size of the gallery. There is more space  temporary exhibitions for  a lecture room an exciting new children’s area. Here are some of the events happening over the summer.

Exhibitions

From 5 May - 20 August there is an exhibition of wall paintings, rope drawings, installations, paintings and even a specially made labyrinth by the Irish-born artist Patrick Ireland. You can also look out for hares bounding up O’Connell Street towards the Gallery. These large hares were made by the artist Barry Flanagan.

The Francis Bacon Studio

The chaotic and colourful studio of Francis Bacon is now on show again. His studio is crowded with over 7,500 items and the walls and doors were used to mix and test his colours.

Family Art Workshops 
Get creative during artist-led Saturday art workshops, week-long Summer art camps. Sunday sketching classes for 7+ year olds take place in the Gallery every Sunday during May and June from 3-4pm. On 20 May there are special events and art workshops in the Gallery for children to celebrate Drawing Day!

The Eve of St Agnes by Harry Clarke

This magnificent stained glass window, inspired by a poem by John Keats, was made with great skill by the artist Harry Clarke. It is shown in a specially darkened stained glass room.

Sean Scully Room

There is a special room dedicated to the abstract artist Sean Scully who donated eight of his paintings to the Gallery. Sean Scully was born in Dublin and is now one of the most admired contemporary artists working today.


The Lane Bequest Paintings

Many of the Gallery’s most famous paintings were bought by Hugh Lane (1875-1915). These paintings are shared between the National Gallery London and Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, but will be shown together in Dublin for the first time since 1913.
