The Lalu Island
(the Kuang Hua Island) |
|
There is an island in the Sun Moon Lake called "Lalu" in thao Language. The Lalu Island
was the previous residence of the Thao and also the place where their greatest ancestor spirit
"Paclam" stayed. During the Japanese reign, the island was called Jade Island. After the
restoration of Taiwan, it was renamed "Kuang Hua Island." "Kuang Hua" signify "the brilliant
shine of the Sun and the Moon" and "honor the Chinese people."
In the October of 1978, the Nantou County Government built "the Matchmaker Pavilion" on the
Kuang Hua Island for visitors to worship and to supplicate. Every year, the government holds a
group marriage ceremony on the water in front of the Matchmaker Pavilion, which always attracts
lots of couples to take part in.
After the 921 Great Earthquake in 1999, the Nantou County Government changed the name of
the island from Kuang Hua to Lalu for expressing their respect toward the Thao people. Moreover,
the Sun Moon National Scenic Area marked out the island as where the ancestors' spirits of the
Thao people lives. On 12th October 2000, the thao clansmen planted the Qie-Dong Tree
representing the habitation of the greatest ancestor's spirit. There are many
legends about Lalu Island spreading in the Thao tribe.
