Airport officials say the Saab-340 was headed to Dresden, Germany. The plane went down in a fireball at the village of Niederhasli, minutes after taking off from Zurich's Kloten airport.
Seven passengers and three crew members were on the flight.
The two-engine aircraft was owned by Crossair, a Swiss regional airline.
Fritz Grotz, Crossair technology chief, said this type of airplane has a good safety record, involved in only four crashes worldwide.
The accident happened in cool, rainy weather. Airplane officials said wreckage from the crash was scattered across 500 metres.
The airport says it doesn't know why the plane went down.
The Saab-340 is widely used around the world as a commuter plane.
