The Australian Democrats have ceased to exist as a registered political party in Tasmania for this year's state election.

The State Electoral Commission has formally deregistered the party after it failed to provide a list of members - as required under the commission's regular review process.

The commission will deregister any party which cannot demonstrate it has at least 100 signed up members.

The acting deputy electoral commissioner Nicole Lugg says people aligned with the Democrats can still run as independents.

"That deregistration means the party can't field candidates at a state election so that the candidates appear under the name of the Australian Democrats on the ballot paper," she said.
