Why It Made Our Top 100 List In a nuclear war shorter than Gilligan's three-hour tour, the world is reduced to rubble, setting the stage for one of the very best computer role-playing games you'll ever see. No dwarves or elves, just post-apocalyptic wastelands as far as the eye can see. This freshness of the milieu as well as the often goofy dialogue keeps the journey fun as you set out to find a new water chip for Vault 13 before it's too late. What makes Fallout so great, though, is the character system known as SPECIAL. The acronym stands for: Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Luck -- but the system also encompasses skills such as lock-picking, weapon proficiencies, or bartering, and "perks" selectable at certain levels further boost your stats. Its resulting character balance is, even by today's standards, remarkable. Taken all together with a peppering of Easter Eggs and '50s retro style, Fallout is a game overflowing with immense replay value and an awesome aesthetic. |
Fun Facts Fallout has references to pop-culture abound! There's Mad Max (a one-armed leather jacket helps you attract the canine NPC known as Dogmeat), Dr. Who (Phone box!), Wargames ("Let's play Thermo-Nuclear War!") and tons more.Another thing worth noting about Fallout is where it drew its inspiration from: 1988's Wasteland. Fallout is often thought of as that game's "spiritual successor" as they are post-apocalyptic RPGs done by Interplay with similar gameplay bits. |
