Abstract
The Tomb « of the Diver » : Study of
the Connections between Symposion and Diving
This article aims at establishing the connections between symposion and katapontismos, depicted together in the iconographic programme of the tomb « of the Diver » at Poseidonia-Paestum, by comparisons with Greek and Etruscan works of art and by enlightening their meanings by Greek literature. Both images evoking the transition to an after death superior life weave a network of semantic and visual correspondances well connected with the defunct's body, and strengthen each other to guarantee his union with the divine in the next world.
