Citation - The Canadian Encyclopedia (including the Encyclopedia of Music in Canada)

Always ask your instructor for the form of citation preferred. Most schools in Canada use the style recommended by the MLA (Modern Language Association). In general, citing from an online encyclopedia is like citing from a printed one. You should include the author's name, article title, name of the encyclopedia, name of the publisher and the copyright date. For an online source, you should add the URL and the date you accessed the information.

Author's name: use the surname first, then the given name or initials. If an article has more than one author, use the surname first for the first name, but provide the other name(s) with the given names or initials first (see examples below). If there is no author named, begin your citation with the title of the article.

Article title: provide the title exactly as it appears in the publication. Put it in quotation marks. Put a period at the end of the title, inside the quotation marks.

Name of the encyclopedia: put the name in italics. Put a period at the end of the name.

Publisher: the name of the publisher will be found at the bottom of each web page. The publisher of The Canadian Encyclopedia is the Historica Foundation.

Copyright date: the date is found at the bottom of each web page. It is the year that the copyright was registered. You do not need the date that the article was written.

URL: if you are submitting your report in paper form, use only http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com but if you are submitting your report electronically, you may include the full URL of the article to establish a link that your instructor can follow.

Date of access: A website can be changed at any time, so you need to include the date that you read the article.
