7th TAKE in Montreal

From July 12 to 18, 2008, Montreal will host the 7th Esperanto Congress of the Americas, bringing together Esperanto speakers from the Americas, and even from outside the continent.

Esperanto is a language constructed by a Polish eye doctor whose name was Ludwig Zamenhof. In 1887, he published a booklet with the basics of the language. In 1905, the first worldwide congress took place, and about one hundred people took part. These days, the estimated number of Esperanto speakers is between 100,000 and 2 million; there is at least one Esperanto meeting currently happening in the world each day, and to date more than 30,000 book titles have been published, including as many original works as  translated works.

TAKE, which takes place every three years, is a congress created under the initiative of the Commission of the Americas of the World Esperanto Association (UEA). It always takes place in a different city and in a different country. Esperanto congresses do not need translators or interpreters because everyone can speak Esperanto.

Montreal is the metropolis of Quebec, in Canada, with 3.5 million inhabitants, located on an island in the St. Lawrence river. Its official language is French. It is a multicultural city, with charming districts, great festivals, and good restaurants. It is often said that Montrealers are friendly and accessible.

The 7th TAKE hopes to accomodate between 100 and 200 participants. This year's  topic is: "Ecosystems, languages, cultures: diversity for a sustainable development in the Americas ". Presentations on this important topic are planned. Moreover, there will be shows, excursions in the city, and a banquet. At the same time the annual meeting of ELNA, the Esperanto association of the United States, will take place.

The Esperanto speakers of Montreal invite friends of the Americas to their city to take part in the 7th TAKE. We hope that the exchanges between the peoples of Americas will engender new ideas, new hopes and new friendships which will contribute to improving our world.
