ABOUT THIS WEBSITE

This website is the home of an international effort to to prevent the genetic engineering of smallpox and to ensure prompt destruction of all remaining stocks of the live smallpox virus. Here you can learn more about the eradication of smallpox and important steps that governments must take to end the threat posed by this extremely dangerous virus. From April through June of 2005, more than two thousand people from eighty countries used this website to send letters urging the WHO Director-General to put smallpox in history books - instead of the genetic engineering lab. At the World Health Assembly (WHA) in June, 2005, the campaign made its voice felt. But much remains to be done.

While we have successfully increased pressure for the final destruction of smallpox virus, the US and Russia continue to press to expand their risky research with this otherwise eradicated virus. This website is organized by Third World Network and the Sunshine Project and co-sponsored by a dozen other non-governmental organizations in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
