Activities

Since its opening in September 2003, hundreds of individuals and organisations have toured the Church’s European Office for Public Affairs and Human Rights and have become familiar with workable solutions to the problems that afflict our society, especially in the fields of drugs, illiteracy, crime and immorality. In addition, the Office has hosted seminars and roundtables on drug prevention, education, and human rights.

In October 2003, the Office held a seminar on drug prevention and rehabilitation and introduced the Narconon program, which uses drug rehabilitation methods developed by L Ron Hubbard. A jurist who participated commented on “the simplicity of this method which can bring about great results”, while an Embassy representative wrote that he “learned many things which will enable me to persuade African teenagers and children about how dangerous it is to take drugs.” The director of a humanitarian organisation commented that “I learned so many things about drug education. I promise to truly give back this education to the people of my country. I do not have words to express my full appreciation.”

One of the education seminars the Office held in October featured Embassy representatives from a range of countries seeking a solution to the problems of education faced in their country. The seminar provided them with an introduction to the educational methods developed by Mr. Hubbard and the successful application of these all over the world. Attendees described the seminar as “very revealing” for the insight it offered into solving the education crisis.

In November 2003, the Office hosted an event at which a Buddhist monk, the Venerable Bagdro, spoke of his efforts to bring human rights and religious freedom to Tibet. The Human Rights Department afterwards assisted him in making a presentation to the European Parliament’s study group on the Tibetan situation.

The Office also toured a business school whose students were learning French. Four of them had chosen, as a class practical, to learn about the Church’s What Is Scientology? exhibit so they could tour the rest of the class through a section of it while explaining its contents in French. Their French professor commented at the end on the Church’s “magnificent programmes to help drug addicts and prisoners.”

In 2004, the Office has held a number of events to release a series of “Effective Solutions” publications, which provide information on workable methods developed by L. Ron Hubbard in the fields of drug abuse, education, disaster relief, and ministerial counselling. These publications also show the Church’s contributions towards advancing human rights, religious freedom and freedom of information.
