Hugo Finlay Grant Southwellplayed in every Scotland match from his debut as a replacement against Samoa in 2004 until injury in the 2007 game against Ireland. From those 30 successive internationals he had a tally of seven tries, including two in a game twice. His first pair was in the historic 100-8 victory over Japan at McDiarmid Park, Perth, in November 2004, and he had a brace also in the Bank of Scotland Corporate international win against Romania by 48-6 at Murrayfield two years later, earning the Man of the Match honour. A week before the Perth match he had a try-scoring Murrayfield debut as he crossed the line against Australia. His other tries were in Six Nations Championship matches – against Ireland at Murrayfield in 2005, and against Wales at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium the following year. He marked his World Cup debut with a try as replacement in the St Etienne victory against Portugal in September 2007. In 19 of his 34 internationals, including nine in a row from the 2005 Murrayfield match against New Zealand, he has started at full back, though he was inside centre for all five games in the 2005 championship. Hugo played in all but one of the six games of the 2004 summer tour to Australasia, making his cap debut as a replacement against Samoa in Wellington, New Zealand, and, following a facial injury to Chris Paterson, Hugo started at full back in both Tests against Australia, making an instant impact on the world stage. He qualifies for Scotland through his maternal grandfather from Falkirk. Hugo, a former pupil of Eastbourne College, played in 27 games for Edinburgh in his first season with the Gunners (2003-2004), during which he scored seven tries. He played for Bristol Shoguns during three years doing business studies and sociology at Bristol University and then had a season with Worcester before joining Edinburgh. Hugo’s best school memory: ‘Three unbeaten seasons from U16 level through to first XV.’
