Tom to stay or go?

BY PAUL SCHWARTZ

Is it overly dramatic and obsessively negative to state that Tom Coughlin's job security rests on the outcome of Sunday's Giants-Bills game?

Nope.

Weather to practice inside or out

By PAUL SCHWARTZ

The Giants were outside again today, practicing on the Giants Stadium field in the bright sunshine amid moderate temperatures and relatively no wind. In other words, perfect early winter football conditions.

That likely won't be the case on Sunday in Buffalo. Even though the forecast isn’t particularly grim for Western New York, there is a strong threat of rain and temperatures in the low 40s. Yes, it could be another bad-weather game for the Giants, who were dreadful in the cold and wind in last week's loss to the Redskins.

Playoff scenarios

By PAUL SCHWARTZ

It's still win-and-in for the Giants regarding the playoffs, but their opportunity to win has dwindled with two regular-season games remaining.

Here's how they Giants this weekend become an NFC wild card team:

IF MINNESOTA BEATS CHICAGO TONIGHT:

Giants clinch playoff berth with:

1) Win or tie OR

2) Redskins loss or tie + Saints loss or tie

IF CHICAGO BEATS MINNESOTA TONIGHT:

Giants clinch playoff berth with:

1) Win or tie OR

2) Saints loss or tie

The Giants can lose their last two games, finish 9-7 and still make the playoffs. Two of the following three things must happen in the next two weeks:

Saints lose one game.

Redskins lose one game.

Vikings lose two games (including tonight).

Ward likely out for season

AP
Derrick Ward, the Giants’ leading rusher, suffered a broken leg Sunday against the Bears, and Tom Coughlin said today it looks like Ward is out for the season.
Ward fractured his left fibula, the thinner of the two bones extending from the knee to the ankle, in the fourth quarter of a 21-16 come-from-behind victory. He rushed 24 times for a career-high 154 yards.
“At this point in time it doesn’t appear to be surgical, but he will be out,” Coughlin said. Asked if he thought that meant for the rest of the season, Coughlin said, “That’s the way it appears.”
