Fact Sheet: Building Materials

  • The structure will form a cross in the traditional manner of European cathedrals
  • The new Co-Cathedral will seat 1,820 people with space for 200 additional chairs

There are about 8,000 cubic yards of concrete in the cathedral:

  • That is a little more than three football fields
  • That's enough to pour a four-foot wide sidewalk from the cathedral to The Woodlands (going north) or to League City (going south)
  • The weight of 8,000 cubic yards of concrete is 32,400,000 pounds

There are about 250 tons of steel in the cathedral

  • That is almost half a million pounds
  • The dome weighs about 80,000 lbs.  It will be constructed on the ground and lifted into place, where it will stand 117 feet tall

There are about 73,000 square feet of Indiana limestone on the exterior of the cathedral

  • That is a little less than two football fields or a sidewalk three and a half miles long
  • The weight of the exterior stone is 2,633,000 pounds
  • The exterior nave will be 86 feet wide
  • The interior nave will be 72 feet tall

There are about 30,000 square feet of marble on the interior of the cathedral

  • That's a little more than half of a football field or a sidewalk one and a half miles long
  • The weight of the interior stone is approximately 300,000 pounds

There are about 86,000 square feet of plaster on the cathedral walls and ceilings

  • That is almost two football fields or a sidewalk almost 4 miles long
  • The weight of the plaster is about 1,290,000 pounds

There are 256,500 linear feet of wire in the cathedral

  • Stretched end-to-end that would be 48 miles long

  • There are two 160 ton chillers to air condition the cathedral
