Hillcrest — Honored as one of the Top Ten US Neighborhood for 2007

Hillcrest has been selected one of the
nation’s top ten great neighborhoods

Let’s make Hillcrest even better.

Please share your pedestrian experiences...

The Hillcrest Town Council Development Committee would like to know about your best and worst experiences while walking around our community. Our objective is to use your experiences as a pedestrian to prioritize areas to improve. We want to know about safe/unsafe intersections, crossing issues, unsafe crosswalks or poor sidewalks. Please share your experiences and be as specific as possible about the location and time of day of your issue. We want to make walking through Hillcrest pleasant for all.

“Save Hillcrest” Wins Another Round

The “Save Hillcrest” group, working with the non-profit organization Friends of San Diego, scored another victory in their year-old lawsuit against the 301 University project. December 7th, the Superior Court awarded the group 80% of the legal costs incurred from last August’s win when the judge agreed that the project voliated the law in seven ways. Friends president Tom Mullaney said this award was made under California laws which recognize the public benefit received when a citizens’ group sues to uphold state and local laws. Unfortunately, the 148-foot building planned for our two-lane crosstown corridor is coming back. For more info or to help with the next legal challenge, contact “Friends of San Diego” at (619) 795-1753. (read more at HillQuest, an Urban Guide)

Hillcrest’s centennial year...

Hillcrest CentennialHillcrest’s Centennial events were organized throughout the year by volunteers from the Hillcrest History Guild...the gala dinner banquet which was held Thursday, October 4th at The Prado Ballroom in the heart of Balboa Park was the highlight of the year. Thank you for joining us at this once-in a lifetime event — featuring a fabulous dinner and dancing to Sue Palmer and Her Motel Swing Quintet. An open air double-decker bus made a wide swoop through the neighborhood to pick guests. The community donated fabulous items for a silent auction in the Prado’s courtyard.

The centennial cruise was held on the Mexican Riviera (Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, Ensenada and several days at sea) from October 19-25...and a great time was had by all! Big thanks to Stewart Rennison, Hillcrest’s own SeaMaster!

Hillcrest boundary sign Hillcrest boundary signs added to the community
Have you noticed the new blue and white HILLCREST signs from the city? Councilmember Toni Atkins and members of the Hillcrest Town Council are responsible for the addition of seven identification signs marking the entrance to our community and noting Hillcrest’s first 100 years. The signs were installed before a ceremony to mark the exact date in 1907 when the “Hillcrest” Company’s office was first opened by William Wesley Whitson in what was then known as University Heights.

Cake was served by five of Whitson’s descendents near the site of his initial sales office at Fifth & University on Thursday, August 2, 2007.

Wanna help clean up our neighborhood?

The next clean-up will be held Saturday, January 12. For more details visit the Hillcrest Clean Team website. Orange t-shirts were everywhere on Saturday, October 13th for another community-wide clean-up. Volunteers from I Love a Clean San Diego will also pitched in and Flexcar again donated the use of a truck. The team concentrated on collecting trash from alleys in the area. Please help keep our neighborhood clean.
