Population 4,000 (1997 census).
Region Morobe Province, Lae District, Boana Subdistrict, interior north of Lae. 14 villages: Samanzing, Biliman, Tusulu, Hobu, Zezegi, Momolili, Zitare, Malapipi, Kwamu, Busu, Nomenga, Zitale-Ogaw, Tuzing, Kaisia. Sambuen is a border community with both Nabak and Mese speakers.

Language use Men 50 years old and older can speak either Yabem or Kâte. Most adults under 30 also use Tok Pisin.
Language development Literacy rate in first language: below 5%. Literacy rate in second language: 5% to 15%. Bible portions: 1996–1997.
Comments Community schools at Hobu and Samanzing. SOV; adjectives, numerals after noun heads; verb affixes mark number; CV, CVC, CVV, CCV, VC, V; nontonal. Mountain slope. Tropical forest. 600 to 1,700 meters. Swidden agriculturalists: coffee. Christian, traditional religion.
