'Year Zero' Not NINE INCH NAILS' First Attempt At Concept Album - Mar. 21, 2007
Launch Radio Networks reports: NINE INCH NAILS' upcoming album, "Year Zero", is reportedly the first of two concept records about a future religious dictatorship taking over the U.S. amid signs that the apocalypse is near. But this isn't bandleader Trent Reznor's first attempt at telling a story through music. Reznor told Launch that he originally intended the group's 2005 release, "With Teeth", to be a conceptual piece as well. "I'd come up with this kind of elaborate storyline, and the record was gonna be a concept record that had a number of pretentious elements to it," he said. "I was gonna talk about multi-layered reality and waking up in a dream you can't wake up out of, and eventually finding acceptance after you go through this period of trying to fight it. It was all kind of a big analogy for me getting sober."

"Year Zero" is scheduled for release on April 17.

NINE INCH NAILS has posted the video for "Survivalism", the first single from "Year Zero", on YouTube. The clip was first revealed on computer USB drives left behind after the band's recent show in London. Fans also spotted letters in the video that, when spelled out, led to yet another in the series of web sites connected to the album's concept, thewaterturnedtoblood.net.

According to The NIN Hotline, a complete list of the web sites relating to the album can be found at ninwiki.com.

Reznor recently told England's Kerrang! Radio that he's already in talks about a film version of "Year Zero".

Bought the last 2 NIN releases on day 1, but each managed to find the "overflow" cd rack in my closet. What I've heard thus far is more of the same...lots of noise experimentation (possibly even groundbreaking, but...yawn) but the hooks are lacking.

Think the plot is interesting, but it sounds like a combo b/w Tommy and Mindcrime...tough to make tangible to the masses. Keep 'em coming Trent, but...for my money...if I'm going to listen to NIN it's still PHM, Broken, and TDS.

Here comes the NIN bashing.... Because they evolve their music and change their sound while people are still stuck in the head banging era... the music is old and dated..... NIN might not be everyones cup of tea but you cant deny the effort and creativity going into all their cds especially this one....He plays and creates most of the music except the drums...How many bands can you say do that except Dave Grohl? Now granted i can say that since i downloaded the 4 songs purposely leaked that they are harder to get into... It does take some listenin to to get into Electronic Noise type music.... Like Thom Yorke's solo cd or Radiohead, Combi-christ... but to me instead of trent staying with the same sound that so many bands are not willing to let go hes moving on and evolving his sound... im not saying rock is going to die but i think we are going to see more and more bands and music that incorporate rock and electronic noise...im pretty much sick of the radio and refuse to listen to it.... most of the bands sound old and dated..... especially shit like Nickelback, disturbed, any emo band, 3 days grace, metallica, breaking benjamin, rrsn, any of that crap..... oh well, i guess the people who love that headbanging double bass screaming like a demon crap will bash something different.... but thats nothing new...these type of people hate change and refuse to accept it......
and wasnt TDS a concept album????

I'd say Trent is executing the Year Zero concept beautifully, websites and USB drives and all. Has anyone done this before? Honestly? Look a little deeper. The music isn't going to be flashy and full of hooks, that's not what it's meant for-- he's breaking away from convention purposefully to convey an idea.

If you're looking for something catchy and stupid forget about NIN so real fans don't have to put up with it.

Nothing about the new NIN cd is original, unique or interesting.
If you like what NIN used to be then check out PIG.
PIG is Raymond Watts who was in KMFDM in the past.
PIG has been around as long as NIN and has many more worth having cds.
PIG has a new cd coming out this year so look out for it if you'd like something more refreshing than this weak version of NIN.

trent is in talks with a studio to get this made into a movie.... wether it happens or not is yet to be seem... and how can you even judge year zero to with teeth if its not even out yet?? only 4 songs have been released and the 5th song being the beginning of the end....
and as for Pig... Pig falls in the same cliche sound as other industrial acts.... not to say they or he doenst have his moments but wouldnt even remotley compare to NIN.... pigs cds all sound the same... as with Funker Vogt, VnV Nation... nothing necessarily wrong with that but im looking for something a little more different and a little more intruiging.... and Year Zero looks to be it... and the guy who said that these are rejected 80's songs, that is the most hilarious thing ive ever heard... You made me and my wife laugh quite a bit..... Anyways im deeply fond of NIn's music as I am with Tool.... i think these two bands are the best that i can relate too..... especially NIN....
and the dude above saying that Trent shouldve stopped after the Fragile yet he is still intrigued enough to come and check out with with teeth show.... Nostalgic reasons is bullshit... the point is you still check out the show..... The shows were predominantly filled with most of the songs from with Teeth....thats seems a little odd that somone with bash NIN but then still go see their show.... Ill bash those emo bands or rap or shitty ass heavy metal and i gurantee i will never step foot in one of their shows

I went to the listening party in Florida and this album kicks ass! Though I was unsure with the songs I downloaded (the leaks) I was pleasantly surprised when I found that the leaks aren't as good as most of the album. I don't know why he chose "Survivalism" to be his first single, because it is probably the weakest track on the CD, but having said that, most of the album rules. I can't wait. His second single, Capital G, is probably going to be his strongest single since closer. And for the record, even though I know everyone hates WITH TEETH, each single was number 1 on modern alternative rock radio NATIONWIDE.

Otherwise you would realize that Trent Reznor is a tremendous genius. His music has always been, and will continue to be, inventive, influential, skillful, and as I previously stated, genius. some people seem to be very ignorant and only like a certain type or genre of music and on here that usually is death or heavy metal. I try to be open and like all types of music within the rock and industrial field but i also know what i dont like. but i really dont go out of my way to bash it... I think that shows that a lot of people simply just dont have lives that they have to go so far and bash every single article that they dont like.... i mean just relax and say your opinion and then go back to playing World of Warcraft and keep living in your parents house till your 30...

The concept demands more than the minimalism presented by the current leaked tracks. I like the hype Trent's built but the music doesn't live up to the seriousness of his supposed message. It's kind of like a take on Skinny Puppy's "Too Dark Park" 17 years later, minus the actual feeling of an album about the world ending and going mad. The "noise experimentation" is interesting, but we're not talking Einsturzende Neubauten quality experimentation - I'm not going to count a 'funny glitch noise' that happens over a 3 second span in 'Me I'm Not' to be brilliant or considered noise experimentation. I like the fact that Trent is talking politics, but perhaps its too little too late on the Industrial scene. Bands like KMFDM, Puppy, Ministry, have been amped on very similar concepts for well over a decade with a plethora of anti-establishment ballads. Trent is mumbling on top of the soapbox Ogre would scream confidently. I want this album to be good, I do enjoy it, but the minimalism is a bit silly considering the magnitude of his concept. I hope to hear far more aggressive tracks on the full abum - but I'm not going to call the minimalist survivalism or me, i'm not to be 'classic' or 'revolutionary' in any sense.

And careful what you say about "Go listen to fall out boy" - I'm sure most of the people doing the bashing here are simply people who liked NIN first a long time ago and moved in deeper into the industrial genre. You can't help but look back with apprehension. When I walk into a Best Buy and the first thing I see is a display for Nine Inch Nails, you can't tell me NIN isn't as commercialized as Dave Matthews, etc. I don't even care how popular the music I like is - But let's not pretend NIN represents an underground scene of genius music that people are too 'dumb to understand' - Meanwhile, someone like you probably hears a song like "Haus der Luge" by Neubauten and thinks "This is terrible". When really, it's far beyond anything ever done by NIN in terms of originality. Reality check, music like the Downward Spiral existed nearly ten years prior to it..you just have to find it.

Is anyone else offended by the fact that Trent is releasing an album that he, by his own admission, put no concious thought into? "HEY!! BUY THIS ALBUM!! I PUT NO EFFORT INTO IT AT ALL!! WHO NEEDS GOOD SONGWRITING WHEN I CAN JUST MAKE NOISES! BLEEP!!"

I find it amusing that so many people confuse evolution of a sound with de-evolution of songwriting. Rembrandt could have "evolved" his technique and look by randomly throwing paint at a canvas and saying "Well, when I painted this I didn;t really want to think about what the comissioner wanted, or color, or subtlety, or form, or recognizable subject matter." And while many of you may agree with the sentiment, once that idea had been erased with time, the world would have been left with another piece of disposable art. Luckily, he dind't and we have the masterfully crafted works that he left behind.

Trent knows what a good effective songs is. Trent knows that if he takes another 5 years to release his next album that his career will be over. And Trent is a master of image and spin. Put these together and what do you get? A man who quickly wrote an album to keep himself doing what he loves (can you blame him?), and when he heard it realized that the craftsmanship was sorely lacking. So what else to do, use that as your image. Screw good songwriting, I'm going to throw sounds at protools and release it under the "I'm an ARTEEST with a MESSAGE" umbrella.

At least I hope this is the case. Otherwise, yet another great creative mind has fallen into entropy.

First off, theruiner, would this require understanding of Trent's music (notes, chords, phrases, performancnes, etc) or an understanding of Trent himself, to know that he puts 100% inte everything he does. Obviously, it requires knowing the man to understand his work ethic. Do I know him personally? No, but then again neither do you.

Secondly, I'm not questioning his efforts. But effort doesn't make for a good album or a good outcome. If I wanted to, I could get really beaten up and sweaty trying to knock down a brick wall by going at it with a wooden spoon. Effective? No, BUT I GAVE IT MY ALL!!!

Thirdly, I'm not saying length of time has anything to do with putting out a good album. Truthfully, the best albums seem to be written and recorded pretty wuickly. It's that whole not bleaboring the emotion thing. I highly suggest that you study the songwriting masters - Peopel like Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, etc. I think you'll find that most of their songs were written pretty quickly. Hell, Otis Redding stayed up all night writing song after song after song. So don't lump me in with the deluded masses who think that becuase something was written fast, it sucks. However, Trent isn't Otis Redding. He isn't Stevie Wonder. He isn't Ray Charles. His songs are good, and he's forged a lot of ground, but it's obvious that he needs more time than he took to write really brilliant songs, because what I'm hearing sounds like second or third demo level material for an album.

As for saying that he knew what he wanted and just went for it. Homeboy, try writing an album sometime, and do it at a professional pace. 1-2 songs per week minimum. Figure that you'll keep about 10% of what you write. If you don't have a clear vision going into that kind of schedule, your brain will explode. Anyone who does this as a professional goes in knowing what they want, so don't think that Trent is forging new ground. He's dressing up poorly written songs in blips and bleeps and spinning it to the masses. Sadly, given the current state of rock radio, the masses are ready to eat it up.
