Gordon Freeman's Bro Saves His Bacon

Gordon Freeman is the saviour of the universe, Gordon Freeman is the archetype silent protagonist, Gordon Freeman can still somehow pull off a mid-90s goatee, blah blah blah. Everybody loves Gordon, but what about John? Nobody loves John. Heck, nobody has even heard of John Freeman, brother of Gordon Freeman. Time for that to change.

shayclothed.jpg hot tears of shame

Wii Boobs (So Old), Dreamcast Moobs (So New)

Know this: Hot Tears of Shame is equal opportunity. Hot Tears of Shame doesn't care if it's featuring jubblies or ding-dongs — just as long as it's embarrassing or shameful. We've got two HTOS clips to prove just that! One involves a fat dude in his underwear playing Samba De Amigo, and the other features a naked woman playing Wii Sports. But since we've already seen naked women playing Wii Sports (so old!), we recommend checking out the fat dude's man boobs first. What's more, the naked lady clip (starring Penthouse Pet Shay Laren) doesn't really feature that much gaming. We feel kinda ripped off. There is real bowling, though. Oh, both clips aren't sorta Not Safe For Work, they're TOTALLY Not Safe For Work.

Hit the jump for the shameful and embarrassing clips.

Contest

Finalists Too Good, Contest Tie

What. A. Contest. Talk about some incredible finalists for out Culdcept Saga sign contest. The voting was so close — too close, actually! We don't do this often (so don't ask in the future!), but it really is too close to call the winner. There are only a few votes that separate Finalist #1 and Finalist #5. Asking for a Kotaku Editor vote didn't help much either! So, tell you want Finalist #1 and Finalist #5, send me your address to kotakucontestATgmail.com, and we'll try to either A). Divvy up the prizes or B). Get more prizes from Bandai.

Nice work and congrats!

weekend note

Weekend Note: Rainy Days and Mondays

To: Ash and Luke
From: Flynn
Subject: I hate wet socks

Ahoy gents! It has been a rainy weekend here in San Francisco. Every time I've gone out I've come home with my pants soaked to the knee and I think I've gone through about six pairs of socks. Something about wearing wet socks and shoes just sucks my soul. Most of the rest of my weekend has consisted of watching episodes of Trailer Park Boys and more tedious unpacking of boxes. There were however some interesting things going on this weekend. For instance:

I got a triple vibrating hands-on with Rez HD
Cooper Lawrence took back what she said about Mass Effect on Fox News
A Metal Gear Solid Collection for PS2 has appeared for pre-order.

Now I am off to have some dinner and play No More Heroes which has been sitting unopened on the plastic box that is serving as my desk for the last four days. Hope you guys have a great week. Goodnight!

Week in Games: Bomberman Land Edition

It's a rather lean list of titles coming out this week. It's a good time for Bomberman fans with two games coming out on three different platforms. We also get handheld police pursuit action with Pursuit Force for the PSP and the Sims continue their quit overtaking of the planet. Anything strike your fancy this week?

Bomberman Land (WII, PSP)
Bomberman brings hot bombing action to the Wii and PSP.

Bomberman Land Touch! 2 (DS)
The follow up to the popular Bomberman Land Touch for the DS.

Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice (PSP)
Fight gang warfare in Capital City.

The Sims: Castaway Stories (PC)
It's like the Sims version of LOST except you actually know what's going on.

Dr. Mario Commercial

From way back in 1990 (can you believe that was already seventeen years ago?) comes this odd Dr. Mario commercial courtesy the fine folks at RetroGameVideos.com. It features a young teenager fighting the evil forces of some sort of bizarre voodoo witch doctor with a game of Dr. mario. While it might not tell us a lot about the gameplay, it certainly teaches us a valuable lesson: Never play Dr. Mario against a witch doctor or you will find yourself looking like that creepy raisin headed guy from Beetlejuice and being forced to listen to a bastardized version of an Alvin and the Chipmunks song. Terrifying. more »

mgsscreen.jpg Metal Gear Solid

The Metal Gear Solid Drinking Game

From the hallowed halls of Sexy Videogameland comes the SVGL Official Metal Gear Solid drinking game (remember kids, you have to be 21 and over to play, at least in the US). Inspired by Polybius' Final Fantasy X-2 drinking game, Leigh Alexander has her own take featuring the world of MGS, and the cost of entry is pretty low:

You will need: A copious portion of American beer. A bottle of Russian vodka, well chilled. Six pack of Red Bull, probably sugarless, since you don't want to get sick. Some good, coarse salt. Either lemon juice, lime juice or sour mix. Calorie-Mate. Or something edible, to keep your stomach steady.

Ready to kill your liver? You can find the full (and funny) rules over at SVGL's Official Metal Gear Solid Drinking Game.

Turok Pre-order Gift is Fangtastic

Kotakuite matthewpaul93 sends in this pic of the toothy pre-order gift he got from his local Game Crazy for pre-ordering Turok. If I had to choose I would probably take the $10 gift card for pre-ordering the game from Circuit City but the large silver fang does have its charms. So, if you have a penchant for metallic orthodontia or need to fill in that gap in your smile, head over to Game Crazy and pre-order your copy of Turok now!

buildabear.jpeg Piracy

Build-A-Bear the Answer to Piracy?

Ok, not Build-A-Bear as such, but the idea of personalization and adding value because of the personalized nature. An opinion piece at Gamasutra on the issue of game piracy uses Webkinz and Build-A-Bear - and the continued decline of DRM in the music business - as a starting point to talk about what could be done to discourage pirating. Stuffed bears an answer to piracy? What? Well, it's all about the customization and personalization in the author's view. Fine for stuffed bears, but what about games? more »

Rumor

Cobalt Blue and Black DS Lite On the Way?

Rumors have been flying about for some time that we here in the US would be getting a cobalt blue DS and it looks like they might well turn out to be true. GoNintendo reported seeing a pre-order page on CircuitCity.com displaying a cobalt and black DS Lite similar in style to the red and black that came out not too long ago. The listing has since been removed but the memory of it has DS color junkies champing at the bit. Word on the tubes is that the new color will be landing in the US sometime in the first part of February. Rumor? Fact? Cruel joke? Only time will tell!

Will Wright on the Making of the Sims

I do adore Rock, Paper, Shotgun - I actually got hooked with an article they published on the ghostly eroticism of The Sims - and last week, they put up an interesting interview with Will Wright on the making of The Sims. I'm not a Sims player myself, but regardless of your feelings on Will Wright and/or his games, it really is an interesting tale of game development. Last Chance to Download Undertow for Free

Don't forget that today is the last day to download your personal apology game from XBLA for free. For the uninformed, I will encapsulate the situation as best I can. Xbox Live had dicey service over the holidays and in an attempt to make up for it, offered Xbox Live Gold members a free game called Undertow. For those who have already downloaded the game, Microsoft will be pleased to offer you 800 MS points if you can traverse the mine field that is their customer service line.

Now that you are all caught up you can use the remaining hours of today to download your free game or attempt to get your free points. You have until midnight, so get crackin'.

The Future of Real-Time Strategy Games

Gamasutra has an interesting little essay up on the potential future of RTS games - one focused less on total annihilation of the enemy and more on the subtle complexities that are the mark of war in the real world. Unlike a lot of pie-in-the-sky game design articles, this one simply mentions a few aspects that could be tweaked and modified in years to come, with the hopes of providing a more satisfying gaming experience:

No RTS game will ever be able to represent politics in lifelike detail. These games are, after all, simplifications of reality. Still, RTS game developers could add a tremendous amount of strategic depth by building politics into their games. Players could be released from micro-managing society and the battlefield, they could be exposed to enemies both within and outside their societies, and they could be given more strategic options than attrition.

It's an interesting little essay if you're into the RTS genre - a little innovation is never a bad thing, since even the most beloved of genres will get a little stale after years and years of more of the same - though I have to wonder how many players would be truly interested in big changes.

Amazon.com has dropped the price of the Wii Zapper with Link's Crossbow Training to mere $20. Of course if you prefer your gun peripherals more gun like, there is also the Nyko Wii Perfect Shot Gun for $14.99 although that one doesn't come with a game. Whichever route you decide to take (if any) you will need to add an item or two on to your order to take advantage of the free shipping.

Stanford Announces Metaverse U Conference

Stanford has put together a conference that is going to be running the weekend before GDC. Being held on the 16th and 17th of February, the aim is to bring together a pack of interesting and varied speakers to talk about (what a shock!) the 'metaverse' and virtual worlds. The list of speakers is solid and it looks to be an interesting event - registration is now open and you can find out more at the Metaverse U site. Full details after the jump: more »

Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core Screens

Playstation Universe has posted a huge gallery of new screenshots from the Japanese version of Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core. While I'm not a huge fan of this particular portion of the series, the screens and footage I have seen from it so far have been pretty impressive. I have included several of them here in a small gallery, but you can see the entire gallery of fifty on Playstation Universe.

GAPP.jpg only in china

China Trying To Keep Out Foreign MMORPGs

It's no secret that foreign games, be they WoW or Korean imports, are wildly popular in China - thus, in a clear case of local protectionism, the General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) has instituted new regulations to keep out foreign game companies:

Under the new regulation, the [GAPP] will postpone the examination, approval and licensing of foreign company products if the companies are sued or targeted for arbitration actions by Chinese online game companies.

It sounds to me like this is dealing with new products and WoW is safe from frivolous lawsuits for the time being - but this is still rife with potential problems, since many domestic games are introduced to China via partnership between foreign companies and domestic operators. The potential negative impacts on domestic companies if games are unfairly held up is huge; and some of the most recent lawsuits involving Chinese and foreign game companies have involved disputes over licenses and operations. Considering Chinese companies have proved they have absolutely no compunction about illegally operating foreign games outside set corporate agreements, I'm not at all convinced this will actually do anything in the long run other than encourage domestic companies to commit IP theft.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Super Smash Bros. Demo Booth Video Marathon

super_smash_bros_brawl_wii_07.jpg

If you just can't get enough of Super Smash Bros. footage, this is definitely the post for you. An SSBB fan in Japan has taken a video camera to his local gaming concern and started filming random battles between players on their SSBB demo station. Currently he has sixteen clips uploaded to YouTube and is updating them regularly for your viewing pleasure. He seems to be uploading them pretty quickly so by the time you read this there are likely to be a few more. Hopefully these demo stations will arrive in the states soon so we can experience it ourselves instead of enjoying it vicariously through overseas shaky cam footage.
