A question of legacy for Clintons
It fell to Mike Turpen, a former Oklahoma attorney general, to warm up the crowd in Norman, and he did so with gusto. "Bill Clinton!" he shouted to several thousand people gathered in the McCasland Field House at the University of Oklahoma. "He gave us eight years of peace and prosperity! Do you remember?" Along the border

The protesters gather every morning before dawn, monitoring the entrance to a fenced compound called the Macehualli Work Center. They are trying to shut the place down. They wave placards and take photos of anyone driving in to pick up the day laborers who congregate there. They want nothing less than to save America from what they call "the invasion." (Full story)

Clawing for a legacy
Legacy? What legacy? There was general amazement when (the now-muzzled) Bill Clinton did his red-faced, attack-dog, race-baiting performance in South Carolina. Revisionist presidential history
In the last few weeks, the Democratic Party has turned on Bill Clinton with the ferocity of 16 years of pent-up resentments. He will not be cut any more slack, and neither will his wife. Meanwhile, the Republican primaries have turned into a Ronald Reagan adoration contest. Neither ex-president deserves what he is getting. Clinton is a victim of long memories; Reagan is a beneficiary of short ones. . . . But the biggest fairy tale about Reagan is the most central one: about taxes and spending. . . . If the GOP is looking around for an icon to worship, it might consider Bill Clinton. He cut spending from 21.4 percent of GDP to 18.5 percent - three times as much as Reagan. (Full story)
