IN a world where almost every aspect of his life was public knowledge, it took Heath Ledger's death to reveal the secret he had been keeping.
It was yesterday claimed by New York authorities that the 28-year-old actor was dating former child-star Mary-Kate Olsen.
The relationship was made public after it surfaced Olsen was the first person phoned by Ledger's masseuse after she found his body in his Manhattan apartment.
Olsen was initially linked to Ledger's death in the first reports coming out of New York on Wednesday.
It was erroneously stated the actor's body was found in an apartment belonging to the former star of sitcom Full House.
Olsen last week attended the Sundance Film Festival in Utah as a promotion for her film The Wackness with Ben Kingsley.
Revelations of a relationship between her and Ledger have stunned many industry reporters, who believed Australian model Gemma Ward was Ledger's latest love interest.
Ledger and Ward were spotted out and about together almost every day of the Christmas holiday break, both back on home turf with their families.
The dates fuelled rumours of a romance that had begun six weeks earlier in New York.
Ledger had also been linked to model Helena Christensen and actors Kate Hudson and Heather Graham.
Christensen, 39, was on her way to visit Ledger when she learned of his death. The Danish model said she got the news as she headed to his flat.
"I am beyond sad at this point. I had just left him a message and heard his voice on the machine," she said.
"He was such a special and genuine person, so extraordinarily talented."
