Mobile Messaging

Mobile messaging refers to exchange of messages over mobile networks. It can refer to delivery of premium and non-premium messages via a variety of technologies including SMS, as well as MMS, Mobile Instant Messaging (MIM) and mobile e-mail.

MO (Mobile Originated)

A mobile message routed from an end-user’s handset and delivered to client or application.

MSISDN (Mobile Station International ISDN Number)

Refers to the telephone number of a mobile subscriber.
MT (Mobile Terminated): a mobile message routed from client or application and delivered to the end user’s handset.

MVNE (Mobile Virtual Network Enabler)

Provides outsourcing services to MVNOs, such as billing, customer care and back-end network elements. A MVNE does not have a relationship with end-user customers. Instead, a MVNE provides infrastructure and services to enable MVNOs to offer services and have a relationship with end-user customers.

MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator)

Is a company that does not own a licensed frequency spectrum, but resells wireless services under their own brand name, using the network of another mobile phone operator.

OTA (Over the air)

SMS-MT feature that sends OTA configuration messages, such as software updates, configuration settings and security locks. It's particularly useful for Mobile Device Management purposes.

OTP (One Time Password)

Dynamic passwords which are altered every time an access request is made to a system, e.g. online banking, making more difficult to gain unauthorized access to restricted resources.

P2A (Person to Application) SMS

Process in which the SMS message is produced from a mobile user to an application. This definition is often used to define enterprise messaging.

P2P (Person to Person) SMS

Process in which a SMS flow is produced from one person (e.g.mobile user 1) to another person (e.g.mobile user 2).

Premium SMS

Short messages may be used to provide premium rate services to subscribers of a telephone network, such as news alerts, financial information, logos and ring tones. On the other hand, mobile originated SMS may also be used in a premium-rated manner for services such as televoting.

SS7 (Signaling System No.7)

Is a set of telephony signalling protocols which are used to set up the vast majority of the world's public switched telephone network telephone calls and mobile messages, such as SMS.

SLA (Service Level Agreement)

Is the part of a service contract where the level of service is formally defined, in order to guarantee quality of the promised service.

SMPP Interface

The Short Message Peer-to-Peer Protocol (SMPP) is a socket-based, open industry protocol, designed for sending two-way SMS traffic. SMPP is the recommended connection interface for clients who are already familiar with this protocol or who would prefer not to program in Java.

SMS Aggregator

SMS aggregator is a mobile telecom company with multiple agreements with operators to send and receive data into and out of the operator’s SMS-Centre, acting as an intermediary between companies (i.e. content and brand owners) that want to interact with end users (through their mobile phones) and the mobile operators. Because aggregators do not have direct access into SS7 connectivity, they cannot guarantee the delivery of messages.

SMS-C (Short Message Service Centre)

A short message service centre (SMSC) is a network element in the mobile telephone network which delivers SMS messages.

SMS Delivery

SMS Delivery refers to the distribution of mobile messages, including SMS and Premium SMS, directly to end-users' mobile phones.

SMS Hubbing

SMS Hubbing is an option to optimise international SMS traffic by avoiding costly bilateral roaming agreements. It enables full interoperability of SMS across mobile operators worldwide, giving operators the opportunity to increase SMS reach, and therefore revenues, based on international text messaging. The GSM Association has introduced the SMS Hubbing concept through its Open Connectivity Project in September 2006.

mTAN (Mobile Transaction Authentication Number)

A mTAN is used by some online banking services as a form of single use passwords sent via SMS to authorize financial transactions. mTANs are a second layer of security above and beyond the traditional single-password authentication.

Time Stamps with time of SMS sending

SMS-MO feature that identifies the time when the SMS is actually sent by the subscriber, offering an exact SMS arrival ‘Time Stamp’ for each incoming message. Especially used in TV competitions/votings.

TON / NPI settings

SMS-MT feature that allows direct passing through of address field values as they were set by the submitting SMS-C.

Unicode

Unicode is an industry standard allowing computers to consistently represent and manipulate text expressed in any of the world's writing systems. As a SMS-MT feature, it allows any content to be sent within a message(s).

VPN (Virtual Private Network)

Is a private communications network usually used within a company, or by several different companies, communicating over a public network. VPN message traffic is carried on public networking infrastructure (e.g. the Internet) using strong security features.

WAP Push

Especially formatted SMS messages that display an alert message to the user, and gives the user the option of connecting directly to a particular URL via the mobile phone's WAP browser. This allows the sending party to instigate the viewing and/or downloading of complex data by specifying a web link within a regular SMS format.
