Hatari! is a 1962 film that foresaw the rise of the environmentalist movement and captures its energy in a drama about poaching and wildlife preservation. A group of men, led by Sean Mercer (John Wayne), go to Africa to hunt and capture wild game with the aim of selling them to international zoos and making a fortune. He's joined by Little Wolf (Bruce Cabot), Pockets (Red Buttons), and a motley cast of other characters. However, things don't go as planned. A rhino gores Little Wolf and sends him to the hospital in the early scenes of the film. Then Anna Maria "Dallas" D'Allesandro (Elsa Martinelli) arrives, a female photographer from the Swiss zoo. Mercer perceives that she'll just be in the way and wants nothing to do with her, but she promises that her zoo will buy most of their catch if she can stay. As they wander around Africa, she slowly makes an impression on the men that may well have Mercer second-guessing his hobby. Plus the troubles that accompany their ongoing pursuit of rhinos aren't helping.

This was originally planned as vehicle to co-star Clark Gable and John Wayne for the first time. Gable's sudden death prevented this, and the screenplay was extensively rewritten. Director Howard Hawks always claimed to be disappointed by the film because John Wayne had no actor of equal strength to play against.
