Rating:
PG-13
Malcolm X is a 1992 biopic from acclaimed writer-director Spike Lee starring Denzel Washington as the legendary civil rights leader and based on The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Malcolm X and Alex Haley. The film begins with the unfortunate childhood years of Malcolm Little, through his years on the streets and in prison, into his conversion to the Nation of Islam and early years as an activist, and finally ends with his evolution into a humanist and his tragic assassination in February of 1965. Director Spike Lee approaches the film with compassion and a relentless pursuit for honesty. The film paints a portrait of human potential, endurance, and ever-evolving nature of the American dream. For his performance in the title role Denzel Washington received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. The film was well received by audiences and critics, and Roger Ebert said Malcolm X stands alongside Lawrence of Arabia and Gandhi as one of the all-time great biopics.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 100

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

The film is inspirational and educational - and it is also entertaining, as movies must be before they can be anything else.

  • 90

    Washington Post Rita Kempley

A spiritually enriching testament to the human capacity for change -- and surely Spike Lee's most universally appealing film.

  • 60

    Variety

The picture comes up short in several departments, notably in pacing and in giving a strong sense of why this man became such a legend.
