The Babe

The Babe, directed by Arthur Hiller, is a 1992 dramatic biographical film about the rise and fall of legendary New York Yankee Babe Ruth. The film opens in 1902 Baltimore, Maryland, when George Herman "Babe" Ruth (John Goodman) is being sent to a Catholic boarding school by his overwhelmed father. Babe soon finds that he does not fit in with the other kids, and he is an easy target for bullies because of his large size. Brother Matthias Boutlier (James Cromwell) introduces Babe to the game of baseball, in an attempt to bond with him. Brother Matthias is shocked when Babe proves to be a natural player. Years later, Babe is playing for the school's baseball team when he is spotted by recruiter Jack Dunn (J. C. Quinn). Jack gets Babe signed to the Baltimore Orioles, where he is quickly traded to the Boston Red Sox, and eventually ends up with the New York Yankees. Babe enjoys great success as a Yankee but also endures a great deal of failure, personally and professionally.
