The Secret Life of Bees is a 2008 American historical drama film by director Gina Prince-Bythewood, who also wrote the screenplay adaptation of the Sue Monk Kidd novel upon which the film is based, starring Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson, and Queen Latifah. Set in early 1960s South Carolina, The Secret Life of Bees is the story of Lily Owens (Dakota Fanning), a motherless 14-year-old girl. Lonely and unhappy, struggling thorugh a troubled relationship with her father, Lily runs away to live with Rosaleen Daise, her balck former caregive and only friend. Lily soon finds herself immersed in the lives of the individuals in the African American community that she joins, finding solace in the bee-keeping tasks of the Boatwright sister, June (Queen Latifah) and May (Sophie Okonedo). But despite a growing sense of belonging, Lily's skin stays as fair as can be, creating a seemingly insurmountable seperation in the racist southern society. The Secret Life of Bees is rated PG-13 for thematic material and some violence.moreless
