Welcome to the What a Cartoon! guide at TV.com. Cartoon Network had begun airing classic Hanna-Barbera and Warner Bros. cartoons, but in 1995, they got interested in new animation after Space Ghost Coast to Coast was a hit. Fred Seibert got the idea for a show that would feature new cartoon shorts by young animators. The What a Cartoon! project was made so that Cartoon Network would get new talents and new original series. Some veteran animators would also make cartoons for the show. In 1995, the cartoon show premiered as World Premiere Toons. Space Ghost introduced the audience to it on his show, complete with the debut of Craig McCracken's Meat Fuzzy Lumkins. Every half-hour episode of World Premiere Toons featured three original cartoons. The success of the show caused CN to continue it and make some of the shorts as their own series. In 1996, the series was renamed What a Cartoon!, but the format remained. The series continued until August 2000. Of the What a Cartoon! shorts, Dexter's Laboratory, Johnny Bravo and Cow and Chicken had already spun off to their own series. The same would later happen to The Powerpuff Girls, Courage the Cowardly Dog and Mike, Lu & Og. In 1997, the show was retitled The Cartoon Cartoon Show, airing shorts from the past and present as well as episodes of Cartoon Cartoons. Cartoon Network announced in 2008 that it was making a project called Cartoonstitute in which would have worked in a way similar to the What A Cartoon! Showand was then cancelled.
