Bus Operators Within Ipswich

There are two main bus operators within Ipswich, as follows:

Ipswich Buses Ltd

Ipswich Buses mostly operate ‘town’ services, departing from Tower Ramparts Bus Station, on Tower Ramparts (off Crown Street), covering most areas of the Borough of Ipswich.  At the time of writing (November 2007) they operate the following ‘town’ services (the numbers refer to the service numbers):

2 - Gainsborough via Derby Road

11 - Heath Road Hospital via Northgate and Renfrew Road

12 - Chantry via Cambridge Drive

13 - Pinewood and Tesco via Chantry

14/14A - Gippeswyk Park

15 - Thorington Park via Maidenhall

16 - Belstead Road and Halifax

19 - Castle Hill and Dale Hall

22 - Woodbridge & Grundisburgh via Brunwick Road and Millennium Cemetery

31 - Heath Road Hospital via Millennium Cemetery and Inverness Road*

38 - County Hall Free Shuttle (Town Centre Circular Service) ***

40 - Early Riser Circular Service

All of the above services are provided with low floor, easy access buses suitable for use by wheelchair users and people with prams and buggies etc. (Note: mechanical failure etc means that occasionally an operator may be temporarily unable to provide a low floor, easy access type of bus). Most buses now have high-visibility grab rails and bell pushes, as well as destination displays on both the side and rear of vehicles.

The requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act means that all bus services must operate with low floor vehicles by 2017.

In addition to the above mentioned services, Ipswich Buses Ltd also operate a number of services under contract to Suffolk County Council from Ipswich to a number of other destinations.

First Eastern Counties Buses Ltd

First Eastern Counties Buses Ltd (FEC) are the other main operator in Ipswich, operating two ‘town’ services from Tower Ramparts but mostly ‘country’ services from the Old Cattle Market Bus Station on Turret Lane.  At the time of writing (November 2007) the below list shows some of the services that they operate:

61/61A - Greenwich via Gainsborough (operates from Tower Ramparts Bus Station)

62 - Bixley via Broke Hall (operates from Tower Ramparts Bus Station)

*** Service 88B operates under contract to Suffolk County Council all day on Sundays/ Bank Holidays.

At the present time only services 61/61A, 62/62A/62B, 75/76/77, 87/87A/87B and 88/88A are provided with low floor, easy access buses suitable for use by wheelchair users and people with prams and buggies etc. (Note: mechanical failure etc means that occasionally an operator may be temporarily unable to provide a low floor, easy access type of bus).

Coach Services

Ipswich is served by coaches from operator National Express, whose services all call at the Old Cattle Market Bus Station, on Turret Lane. At the time of writing (November 2007) there are daily coaches running as follows:

X350 - To Stowmarket, Bury St.Edmunds, Newmarket, Cambridge, Huntingdon, Peterborough, Leicester, Nottingham, Mansfield, Chesterfield, Sheffield, Manchester, Manchester Airport, Liverpool.

X350 - To Colchester, Colchester (University Of Essex), Alresford, Thorrington, St.Osyth (Holiday Village), St.Osyth, Jaywick (Holiday Park), Jaywick, Clacton-On-Sea.

X481 - To Capel St.Mary, Witham, Chelmsford, Brentwood, Stratford, London (Embankment), London (Victoria Coach Station).

X481 - To Trimley St.Martin, Trimley St.Mary, Walton, Felixstowe (Great Eastern Square), Felixstowe (Bus Station).
