Interview mit Sara Del Rey

Sara Del Rey im exklusiven Interview

Brian: Most German fans may know you from your matches for Ring of Honor, which is pretty popular in Germany, too. But the promotions you worked for reads like a who-is-who of independent promotions. Are you still counting?

No, I am not counting…when I think of all the places I have been fortunate enough to work I am so proud. I have been some pretty cool place!

Brian: You are the current SHIMMER champion. Unlike ROH, many German fans won't know, what SHIMMER is. How would you describe SHIMMER?

Shimmer is best described as the best all female wrestling promotion in the world! We are the female affiliate to ROH so that tells you what sort of standards we hold to. If you haven’t seen it shame on you….

Brian: I have the impression, that most of the indy audiences finally appreciate a good match - no matter if the performers are men or women. Would you agree?

For the most part yes the fans are very accepting of good wrestling. Every once in a while I still run across closed minded people who do not think women should not be wrestling, but I don’t mind. It is more of a challenge to try and entertain them.

Brian: Meanwhile, WWE is still doing diva searches, lingerie pillow fights and pudding matches. Does this bother you?

Not really because they are making people want to see the total opposite that much more. I know how hard I work and how much I love wrestling and that is something rarer than looking good in a swimsuit.

Brian: We have equal rights in almost any part of today's society. In the entertainment business, there is no difference being made between a good female or male musician, no difference between a good actor or an actress. The audience seems to appreciate talent, no matter what gender. But the mainstream wrestling business seems to me like a relict of ancient times. What are your thoughts about that? Why does wrestling change so slowly?

That is a real good question. I think by design wrestling is a macho sport and that will attract a certain type of person. The main stream wrestling TV shows now are marketed to a very small percentage of people and unfortunately it is the same type of person. Maybe it is not so much wrestling but our society as a whole.

Brian: In your career, you wrestled a lot of guys. I read that in one match against the Thomasellis, you suffered a concussion and lost a tooth. Is it harder to work with men or women?

That didn’t happen, not that I remember at least. It is always a challenge getting in the ring no matter who your opponent. You defiantly have different issues when dealing with men and women. Usually with women I am bigger and stronger so my style is much different than when I wrestle guys. As you all can imagine Guys hit a lot harder as well.

Brian: Many people say, you are the best women's wrestler in the business today. How did you become so succesful? Are you just a natural or is it hard work?

I just dedicated myself to this. I told myself as long as I try my best with everything I do from training to actual matches that I will be ok. It has taken so so much for me to get to the point I am at now and I still feel I have so far to go. I was so not a natural I remember spending hours working on just my footwork alone to be most effective in the ring.

Brian: In March, you went to England to wrestle for ROH. Give us one example of the differences between European and American wrestling fans.

That was so awesome it was my first time in England. I can’t really give a fair example of differences because I was with ROH and the type on energy there fans bring is always so amazing. Hopefully I can go back and get a better feel of the fans there.

Brian: I know it's a little bit clichee, but I LOVE the word association game at the end of an interview. I bet you know how it works: I mention somehting and you answer the first thing that comes into your mind.
