Cheshire Constabulary Structure

At the end of 2004, police performance in Cheshire had improved, but demand for police help was increasing and public confidence had fallen. Despite a reduction in crime, the public did not feel safer. After a detailed consultation process run by the Force, local people's overriding wish was clear - they want to see a more visible and localised police service.
The Force responded by creating 18 Neighbourhood Policing Units, each with very local Community Action Teams and a local investigation team. NPU Officers concentrate on preventing and detecting local crime and targeting offenders, building contacts in the local community, resolving problems by working with local organisations and individuals, and being visible and accessible.

The new structure brought in specialist services at an area level. Three Areas (Northern, Eastern and Western) introduced Targeted Patrol Teams responding to emergency calls, a Specialist Investigation Units detecting serious crime, Demand Management Units to ensure incidents are dealt with promptly and the public get a better service, Public Protection Units to look after the vulnerable, Intelligence Units and Pro Active Policing Units targeting the persistent criminals, Partnership Development Units and Custody Investigation Teams.

You can find out more about NPU stucture here.

Each Area is led by a Chief Superintendent tasked with making sure that policing gets smarter, is even more effective when it comes to detecting and preventing crime, and provides the sort of support the public are looking for.
