Indonesia To Buy Russian Corvettes

In a complex arrangement, Indonesia is To Buy Russian Corvettes. The deal involves Spain as a partner to build the ships hulls. The hulls of the Corvettes will be built on the designs of St. Petersburg company Almaz. However, the issue of intellectual property rights as well as defence secrets will need to be worked out. It is expected to cause delays while these issues are resolved. By involving Spain in the project, it will help Indonesia project a more independent defence policy.

The exact number of Corvettes has not yet been revealed. Russia’s Severnaya Verf will complete the fitout and armaments. Severnaya Verf which was founded in 1912, is a leading Russian ship builder. The Project-20382 corvette is designed for coastal patrol, escort and antisubmarine warfare operations. Such a corvette comes at a relative low price compared to more expensive corvettes offered elsewhere. It fits in well with Indonesian naval doctrine.
