Fresh Paint author Glenwood Sherry demonstrates how to transform an ordinary terra-cotta planter into a 19th-century work of art using bronze powder instead of paints.

Steps:

  1. Take an ordinary terra cotta planter and apply one coat of red primer. Let dry for a couple of hours. This project can be completed on many different items, such as plastic flower pots and concrete plant stands, if the primer is applied first.
  2. Paint an even coat of exterior, satin finish gray latex paint. Let dry.
  3. Mix bronze powder, which can be purchased at arts and crafts stores, with 1/2 pint of exterior grade, marine varnish. Brush it completely over the surface and let dry overnight (figure A).
  4. If you want to create a tarnished look, use a light green exterior, flat finish paint and sponge it over the planter. Turn the sponge over and remove the excess paint, leaving the light green in areas that would naturally tarnish over time (figure B). Complete this step one side at a time, as the paint will dry quickly.
