CAREY ISLAND: It's Orang Asli who need the break

WITH reference to your report on the Mahmeri tribe of Carey Island, Selangor ("Help, yes, but 'don't talk too much'" -- NST, Feb 20), I wish to point out that electricity and water supply was only connected for the Orang Asli during the election and after a cash donation of RM17,000 was made towards the cost of installation by Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali in 2003.

Please note that it is largely the Orang Asli who are neglected and not the other ethnic groups of the country.

Orang Asli are by far the poorest of the poor and while all the others are being developed along with the nation, the Orang Asli are left far behind in their bamboo culture.

They cannot even enjoy the basic amenities, which are necessities to every human being.

I have been involved with the Orang Asli for the past 60 years and have fought for their cause in thought, word and deed. Some of my efforts have paid off but one man can only do so much.
