Jaap Eden was great cyclist and speed skater, and he is known as the first "king of speed skating". He won the first official World Championships held in Amsterdam 1893. He was also World Champion 1895 and 1896. He was also a great cyclist, becoming World Champion in track cycling 1894 and 1895.

His legendary 5000 m World Record set in 1894 - 8.37,6 - was the first 5000 m under 9 minutes, and the record stood for more than 20 years before is was broken. The Russian Nikolay Strunnikov beat the time in an out of competition race in 1911, but this time was not approved as a World Record until 1967. Eden was also the first to do a 10000 m under 18 minutes. He lowered his own World Record by 1 minute and 16 seconds to 17.56,0 in February 1895, after Peter Sinnerud and Karenius Larsen-Stai both had done 18.50,0 in a previous pair, becoming the first to skate under 19 minutes.
