Janvier

Along the unpaved portion of Highway 881, north of Conklin and 100 kms south of Fort McMurray, is the hamlet of Janvier/Chard. The community is mostly inhabited by Metis, and is home to the Chipewyan Prairie First Nation.

Janvier/Chard resources help support a combined population of about 143 people within the area. Commercial facilities include stores, gas bars and a construction company.

Access to the communities, in addition to the highway, includes a small-craft, lighted grass airstrip and bus service return from Fort McMurray.

Oil sands and gas activity is increasing in Janvier/Chard, which has been providing employment opportunities to the local residents, as well as forestry and local government services.

Two volunteer fire departments exist for the area—one from the First Nations and one from the municipal hamlet. Other emergency and health services are delivered from Fort McMurray.

A $1.5 million facility is being built to house the Volunteer Fire Department, allowing for training space, a multi-purpose room and a Community Administration Office. As well, Janvier/Chard has an RCMP satellite office.

Homes and businesses are serviced with electricity, water, telephone and self-purchased propane. Contributing to the community are the Chipewyan Prairie Community Association, and a Northland School Division elementary school (Grades 1-8). Some students of Janvier/Chard are bussed to Fort McMurray for secondary school, while others stay in the community and attend the high school offered by the First Nations. Visiting health personnel and local church services are also available in the community.
