UBC Board of Governors Approves Request for LL.B. (Bachelor of Laws) degree to be renamed J.D. (Juris Doctor)

On February 7, 2008, the UBC Board of Governors approved a student-led initiative recommending that UBC Law begin the process necessary to change the name of its first degree in law from an LL.B. to a J.D.  At present, the University is working to secure any necessary provincial approval.

Approval by the UBC Board of Governors is an important milestone in a process that first began in 2005 when the Academic Issues Caucus of the Law Students’ Society launched a campaign to inform students about the two degree designations prominently used worldwide for first degrees in law – the LL.B. and J.D.  Students voted to support the change in a referendum held in February 2006.  At a meeting on February 15, 2007 (following a year of research and rigorous evaluation), the UBC Law Faculty Council voted in support of the initiative.

Throughout the process, which included submissions to the Applied Faculties Sub-Committee, the Senate Curriculum Committee, the Senate Scheduling Committee and the full Senate, the Faculty has received a great deal of feedback from UBC Law Alumni about the proposed degree name change, with the majority enthusiastically supporting the change. The Faculty submitted a complete record of alumni feedback to the UBC Senate Curriculum Committee and a summary of feedback to the UBC Senate which approved the change on December 12, 2007.

The positive feedback came from all generations of alumni, with many expressing an interest in changing the name of their degree retroactively as soon as that option is available. The Faculty also carefully reviewed the feedback from those opposing the change. We appreciate all alumni who took the time to provide feedback on this important issue.

Once the approval process is complete, details will be finalized regarding the implementation timeline, including which class will be the first to be granted the J.D. degree. For those alumni who wish to change the name of their degree retroactively, information on the process will be posted on the UBC Law website as it becomes available to us.
