Will Smith insisted he and his wife are not Scientologists

They may be best pals with Tom Cruise, but Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith have insisted that they are not Scientologists.

"You don't have to be Jewish to be a friend of Steven Spielberg," the I Am Legend star told the New York Daily News.

"You don't have to be a Muslim to be a friend of Muhammad Ali. And you don't have to be a Scientologist to be a friend of Tom Cruise."

The 39-year-old and his wife, who has been spotted out with the Cruises at various events and on the red carpet, added: "I am a Christian. I am a student of all religions, and I respect all people and all paths."

Will was speaking out after a magazine claimed that they had been recruited into the controversial Church of Scientology.

In the past, he has been quite complimentary about the religion, saying: "I just think a lot of the ideas in Scientology are brilliant and revolutionary and non-religious."
