Jan. 20 Public Service Set for Professor Robert Solomon

AUSTIN, Texas—A public service for Professor Robert C. Solomon, who died Tuesday, Jan. 2 at the age of 64, will begin at noon on Saturday, Jan. 20 in the Campus Club in Walter Webb Hall at Guadalupe and 25th streets.

Solomon died in the Zurich, Switzerland, airport. Swiss medical authorities said the cause of death was pulmonary hypertension.

Solomon, the Quincy Lee Centennial Professor of Business and Philosophy and a Distinguished Teaching Professor, published more than 40 books on ethics and the history of philosophy, including “The Passions” (Doubleday, 1976), “In the Spirit of Hegel” (Oxford, 1983), “From Hegel to Existentialism” (Oxford, 1987), “Continental Philosophy Since 1750” (Oxford, 1988), “Ethics and Excellence” (Oxford, 1992), “The Joy of Philosophy” (Oxford, 1999) and “Living with Nietzsche” (Oxford, 2003).

Before coming to the university in 1972, Solomon taught at Princeton University, the University of California, Los Angeles and the University of Pittsburgh. He received his undergraduate degree in molecular biology from the University of Pennsylvania, and his master’s and doctor’s degrees in philosophy and psychology from the University of Michigan.

He was also a lecturer and consultant worldwide for a variety of institutions and corporations and appeared in the 2001 film “Waking Life” as a philosophy professor.
