- New Zealand aquaculture’s main export markets are Australia, USA, Japan and the European Union.
- Farmed greenshell mussels were New Zealand’s most valuable seafood export in 2006, worth $173,568,717.
- New Zealand consumption of farmed salmon grew by over 15% in 2006.
- Nearly half the seafood consumed as food worldwide is raised on fish farms rather than caught in the wild.
- World aquaculture has grown at an average annual rate of 8.8% from 1950 to 2004.
