52 Million Travelers and Over 387,000 Metric Tons of Air Cargo Passed through Houston’s Airports in 2007
January 28, 2008

Over the past 12 months, China Airlines Cargo, Korean Air Cargo, EVA Air Cargo, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Continental Airlines and British Airways, have launched or announced more than 42 additional weekly flights from Houston; inaugurated three new Asian all-cargo carriers; and introduced service to new markets such as Korea, Taipei, the United Arab Emirates, Heathrow Airport in London, Moscow, Russia and Singapore, all from the Houston Airport System.

As a result, 2007 registered another record-setting year of passenger and air cargo traffic figures. Over 387,000 metric tons of air cargo and 52 million passengers were served by the Houston Airport System in 2007. That’s according to the yearend traffic figures released, this week, by the Houston Airport System.

“Houston has a very strong origin and destination market, as well as very competitive aviation opportunities in connecting markets. Our George Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby airports offer excellent customer service and state-of-the-art facilities,” says Richard M. Vacar, director of the Houston Airport System. “As we continue to see more legislative changes and additional longer-haul aircraft, more carriers will be adding Houston to their destination portfolios, and we will be ready for them. We are very excited about having served 52 million passengers in 2007 and are confident this year will be equally as busy.”

Of those travelers, over 7.7 million were on their way to international destinations – marking a significant year-over-year increase of 4.2 percent, in comparison to the same timeframe in 2006. In the month of December 2007, the international region with the most significant growth was Asia, Africa and Australia combined, with a dramatic increase of 30 percent in passenger traffic.

Total air cargo shipments to and from Houston, last year, increased by 5.4 percent, in comparison to the same timeframe in 2006. International air cargo traffic grew by 3.5 percent over the course of the same twelve months .
