Creative quotient
Ajay (Ajay Devgan) is a psychiatrist who is on a cruise holiday with friends, one doctor couple who is on the verge of a divorce and another described as “Happily Unmarried”. He falls head over heels for a cocktail waitress Pia (Kajol), woos her relentlessly and wins her over.
But after marriage and pregnancy comes a shock - Pia, at 30-minus, is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, with her pregnancy hastening the progress of the condition. Ajay’s love is tested as he battles with his will to fulfill all the dreams Pia has and the need for keeping her under institutional care, especially after she ends up being almost responsible for the death of their son. The intimate connect which the other two couples have with Ajay and Pia also modifies their takes on their own relationships.
Technical Expertise
There are films that ask for technique-savvy narration and those that don’t. Somewhere within director Devgan lurks a passionate lover of technology and this proves to be the undoing, for stories that are strong on emotions need straight, crisp but heart-tugging storytelling, and if “form” is brought in, it should be to boost already-solid content (Taare Zameen Par, Black, which is also about Alzheimer’s) and not to overwhelm or supercede the storytelling.
Though Kajol and Ajay put in stupendous performances - Sumeet Raghavan is great too, and Divya admirably restrained - the scripting and direction prove the film’s undoing. The first half is at odd variance with the rivetting second, and Dhir’s dialogues often verge on the irritatingly gimmicky. The camerawork by Aseem Bajaj is awesome, but the music score is below average.
And so, though the message is truly praiseworthy, that love and acceptance should be unconditional, the body in which the beautiful soul is placed is flawed - and how!
Verdict
The film just about gets three stars, one for the lead pair’s terrific performances, one for its truly big message even if delivered in an unsatisfactory way, and one for its technical calibre.
