Emily Hirst of Blade

13-year-old Canadian actress Emily Hirst plays Charlotte, a 200-year-old vampire, on Blade: The Series. You Smallville fans might recognize Emily, as she played Maddie Van Horn in last season's "Fragile" episode. We sat down with Miss Hirst to talk all things undead and loving it.

UGO: Are you shooting an episode this week?

EMILY HIRST: No, I finished my six episodes.

EMILY: How was doing the whole shoot?

EMILY: It was so much fun.

UGO: Do you ever see your character ever coming back?

EMILY: I don't know. I really hope so, but I don't know what the writers have planned.

UGO: What was your audition process like?

EMILY: Well, I got the script, which had a lot more lines compared to other scripts I've gotten because the character is old. So she had harder language that she was using but I was very excited when they said that I had landed that role.

UGO: What was it like playing a 200-year-old character?

EMILY: It's definitely something new for me so it was really fun and really challenging and I had a great time doing it.

UGO: Did you have someone help you come up with different mannerisms that a 200 year old vampire might have?

EMILY: I think I came up with it myself just based on the dialogue and stuff like that.

UGO: I was sent a clip on you on the show about to eat a baby.

EMILY: Oh yeah. [laughs]

UGO: Was that gross?

EMILY: Well, it wasn't gross when I was doing it and I was just being nice to the baby. I would play with the baby off camera.

UGO: Did you know much about vampires before you got the role?

EMILY: Not much, only from like Halloween stories and stuff like that.

UGO: Did you do any research into vampires?

EMILY: I didn't, because I had a meeting with some of the writers and they filled me in on everything.

UGO: One of your episodes was written by [comic book writer] Geoff Johns, how was it working with him?

EMILY: I didn't work much with him. I only met him a couple times a but he's great.

UGO: Does this make you want to go read some Blade comic books?

EMILY: I don't read comic books all that often but if I got a Blade comic book that would be pretty cool. I'd be more into it now than I would have been before.

UGO: Were you a fan of the Blade movies before you took on the role?

EMILY: I had never actually seen them and I still haven't.
