MUSEUM STORY

The first county museum was located on the third floor of the old West End Building which stood on the N.W. corner of Washington and Monfort where the Billings School playground is. The collection was quite extensive, housing many relics of the area. Upon the destruction of the old building, no place could be found to locate the exhibit, many of the artifacts were returned to the original owners, and the remaining objects were sold. During  1976, the Decatur County Historical Society organized the present museum as a project celebrating the nation's bicentennial year. It was located on the second floor of the K of P Building. After five years in this location, an anonymous donor contributed money for the present home.

COLLECTION- Through the generosity of Margerat Donnel Becker's loan of several fine pieces of furniture, the beginning of a home museum was well on the way. Several unusual portraits of former county residents hang in the parlor & sitting room. A variety of interesting furniture such as, sofas, desk, chairs and a dining room set are on exhibit in a home-like atmosphere. Many objects of county historical interest are displayed in the several rooms:  manikins dressed in clothes of years gone by, antique cameras, crude medical implements, etc. The side yard has a surprise or two, while the garage in back is stuffed with a miscellaneous treasury ranging from a 1929 fire engine to large and small tools used by our forefathers.
