  • The Rev. Father Nikitas Theodosion, chaplain of the St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine on 41 St. George St., continues the Lenten schedule of noontime services each Friday at the St. Photios Chapel.

    There will be no noontime services today, recognizing koufi evdomadha -literally the "deaf" week, observed before Holy Week; April 25, Good Friday; and on May 2 recognizing Bright Week.

    The Shrine is closed in observance of the holy days Good Friday, April 25, and Holy Pascha, Sunday, April 27. The Shrine will be open April 26 and April 28.



    Services at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, County Road 214, include:

    * Saturday, Lazarus Saturday, Liturgy 9 a.m.

    * Sunday, Palm Sunday, Matins 9 a.m., Liturgy 10 a.m., Vespers, 6:30 p.m.

    * Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday, vespers 6:30 p.m.

    * Holy Wednesday, Presanctified Liturgy, 9 a.m., Sacrament of Holy Unction 6 p.m.

    * Holy Thursday, Liturgy 9 a.m., Service of Holy Passion 6 p.m.

    * Holy Friday, Royal Hours, 8:30 a.m., Vespers of the Descent from the Cross are offered. The Body of Christ is taken down from the Cross 1 p.m., the Service of the Burial of Christ, 6:30 p.m.

    * Congregation Sons of Israel will conduct an unveiling of the headstone for Max Jaffe at 11 a.m. today at the Congregation Sons of Israel Cemetery, Evergreen Avenue.

    Mr. Jaffe died April 6, 2007, at the age of 104. He was described as a pillar and an inspiration in the St. Augustine community. There is much recognition in his synagogue for his years of leadership and service, including the social hall of the synagogue, which was named The Max Jaffe Social Hall.

    Also a Passover Yizkor is planned on two occasions Sunday at 10 a.m. and April 27 at 10 a.m. at the Congregation Sons os Israel, 161 Cordova St. All are welcome.

    * Greater St. Mary's Missionary Baptist Church will kick off the church anniversary at 4 p.m. Sunday. New Mt. Christian Ministry, under the leadership of the Rev. Ronald Stafford, will be in charge.

    St. Mary's is celebrating its 133rd anniversary. Light refreshments will be served.

    * The New Mt. Moriah Senior Ushers Ministry will celebrate at 7 p.m. April 25, welcoming guest speaker the Rev. Ron Rawls, pastor of St. Paul AME Church.

    Rawls is a member of the board of trustees, finance committee, ministerial efficiency and evangelism board of the East Conference, AME Church, and 11th Episcopal District. He also serves as coordinator of the Sons of Allen and on the finance committee for the south district.

    Rawls has served as St. Paul pastor since December 2007. He has a B.A. in religion from the University of Florida and is enrolled at Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary in the master's of divinity degree program.

    * San Sebastian Catholic Church Ladies Guild will host a reception April 27 after the 10 a.m. Mass, for children celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation. All are welcome.

    * "Human Costs of the Iraq War" is the topic at the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

    As the war in Iraq enters its sixth year with no end in sight, Unitarians will mark Justice Sunday with a sober consideration of its real costs to human beings. The service will focus on the spiritual and psychological consequences of this prolonged violence and its impact on the quality of life for coming generations.

    Three speakers will share their insights regarding the costs of war: the Rev. Don Richter, a retired Presbyterian minister; Terry Buckemeyer, former therapist and social worker and member of Veterans for Peace; and Zollie Goodman, a recently returned Iraq veteran, who will recount his personal experience in combat and in his return to civilian life.

    Prior to the regular service, Downstairs Dialogue is held at 9:30 a.m. Topic is "Financial Planning for Retirees in Times of Economic Uncertainty"

    Fellowship meetings are held Sundays at 10:30 a.m., 2487 A1A South and Florida Avenue, miles south of Route 312. Following the meeting, refreshments will be served. For more information see www.uufsa.org

    * Services at Congregation Sons of Israel begin at 7:30 p.m. today at the synagogue, Cordova Street, under the direction of Rabbi Samuel Cywiak. All are welcome. An oneg shabbat follows. At 10 a.m. Saturday, regular services are held, and luncheon follows, provided by the synagogue.

    * Temple Bet Yam, 2487 State Road A1A, a reform Jewish congregation, will be having services today led by Rabbi Mark Goldman.     * Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, Hastings, is celebrating its deaconess anniversary at 3 p.m. Sunday, announces Pastor Gregory James.

    * "The Costs of Discipleship," taken from Luke 9: 57-62 is the sermon topic at 11 a.m. Sunday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. The message will be shared by the Rev. Willie Pittman, assistant pastor.

    * The adult Bible study class at Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church, 21 Milton St., continues its study of the book of Romans at 9 a.m. Sunday. Children's Sunday school meets at the same time. Divine service is at 10:30 a.m., followed by fellowship. Services are interpreted for the hearing impaired by the Rev. Walter Busby.

    A new Wednesday study has begun focusing on "Heroes of the Faith." It begins at 6:30 p.m. following 5:30 p.m. supper. Cost of the supper and study materials is $3 per person per session. Oren is pastor. * Family Destiny Worship Ministries hosts a revival at 7:30 p.m. April 24 and 25 featuring Evangelist Glynda Henderson, Jacksonville.
