Description:
Sedna is an Inuit goddess.

I spent a long time on this song. I have never invested so much energy symbolism and love in a piece of music. most of the "stuff" i have created up until this point has been under the twenty-four hour spell of a muse I guess you could say. The instrumentation, lyrics, and recordings have changed many times since the first track was laid down as an experimentation.

this is the first time I have been truly satisfied with the recording quality. I could call this song complete, but I want to add strings (cello and violin) and more percussion. who know. I want input I suppose. Any advice you may have will be welcomed.

I began with two guitar tremolo tracks panned to different sides. Then a "bass riff" was created on guitar because I do not have bass. Vocals came second. Violins last.
No software instruments were used, all tracks are audio and recorded with a microphone through an maudio 410 interface. mostly Reverb was used. Epic diva was used on the Vocal tracks.

Thank you for listening,
Namaste.

Lyrics:
on a chariot as bright as the sun
blessed by apollo when heaven first sung
sedna arrived with wisdom divine
when a virgo sun and vertex aligned

a laurel leaf crown, guiniverean grace
a dancers step and a beautiful face
her presence like a musical key
resonated the song of her infinite being

search her seas and you might find
an angel of the metamorphic kind
loving sedna will open your eyes
she'll show you the light when all your life you've been blind
tend her fire and you'll feel her spark
she's a vestian work of art
loving sedna will warm you heart
and bring spring to an age of winter lived in the dark

daughter of the moon she lights up a room
known to the pantheon as the goddess neptune
queen of the oceans protector of earth and sea
conducting the cosmic symphony with mercury

maker of peace bringer of dreams
she'll be a woman, with sword, on one knee
to swing at some evil for green victory
she looks to the sky when departing the land
her tribe sings prayers pushing boat across sand
we say to our queen with the vulnerable hand
you've been touched by a goddess
born to take a stand

search her seas and you might find
an angel of the metamorphic kind
loving sedna will open your eyes
she'll show you the light when all your life you've been blind
tend her fire and you'll feel her spark
she's a vestian work of art
loving sedna will warm your heart
and bring spring to an age of winter lived in the dark

sing on sedna
sing on
your voice will be heard across seven seas and beyond
love hard sedna
love hard
love and forgiveness will heal all scars
climb high sedna
climb high
there's no limit to what you accomplish if only you try
stand tall sedna
stand tall
great power lies inside of you awaiting your call
and be strong sedna
be strong
the strength and pulse of your heart beat for us all
so live long sedna
live long
heaven and earth will sing praise when you've gone

Hey, i never considered the guitar sounded medieval, but it is a very fitting description, and perhaps i did that unintentionally, because the song is meant to be some what of an old prayer, i suppose. Thank you so much for your kind words. I love that: folk symphony.

was there something wrong with the lyrics?

Lots of stuff going on... — 05/05/08 - 11:05:50 AM
You asked for a critique :-) First of all, this is quite enjoyable, I like the rhythmic gait of this, the guitars and percussion propel this gently but firmly along, very nice. Your ethereal singing and the soft violin work is really pretty.

As for negatives, they are somewhat minor. There are many instruments in here, so it sounds a little crowded sometimes, but your panning of things apart helps a lot. Many of the pitches are in the midrange and high end, there's not a lot of bass sound in this, perhaps a cello or low droning bass sound of some kind that comes and goes? The pace is rather relentless, with the constant dynamics (no break of slow/soft for a refrain), and the constant stream of lyrics... I would have preferred a breath between stanzas to let the lines sink in before launching into the next stanza. But... that is because I was trying to follow the words... perhaps this is meant to be more meditative, and you wanted it to wash over me (which it did). This will take a few more listens to sink in. But I want you to know it is quite good for an all-audio-recorded song. Wonderful singing, guitar playing, drumming, and violin playing... that in itself is quite a delight to hear.

ttfn,
Drakonis

very nice — 05/05/08 - 09:58:37 PM
that you have taken the time to critique a song that I would like to improve. unfortunately only certain measures can be taken considering my reluctance to rerecord this one anytime soon =) haha.

Glad you feel it is enjoyable, and thank you for your kind words =D

Hm, what do you think should be taken out, if you had to choose? Panning definitely helped, I agree. The cello will be added soon. I have to improve my cello skills a little more, though the parts i would be playing do not require a lot of talent, and also build up the motivation to tackle this song again. If i rerecorded it, I am not sure that I would change the relentless pass, but perhaps that is just because I have listened to it so much i could imagine it no other way.

it was meant to be meditative actually, the entire song is a meditation/prayer, closed with the sound of Ohm. Thanks, I worked relentlessly trying to make not so spectacular equipment produce high quality sound... there are a few percussion parts that need to be mixed. I would like to add more percussion, what you are hearing is the only the foundation i suppose.

as always drakonis, it is a pleasure hearing from you =)
you'll have a remix pretty soon.

peace and namaste.

Acoustic — 05/06/08 - 06:08:08 PM
All too often "acoustic" means "I'm too lazy to do more about arranging than just strumming my guitar". Not so in your track. I really appreciate the careful arrangement. The picking is refreshingly different.

You've also done a lovely job on the vocals. Multiple tracks, each with their own sound, imaginative harmonies. Really nice.

Hm. What's that thumping sound? That's a tad annoying. Some better percussion maybe?

haha — 05/06/08 - 09:46:20 PM
thanks for listening and your comment.

the "thumping" noise is supposed to symbolize a heart beat. yes, i intend to add more percussion, this is all i have now =)

gracias again!

This is an amazing song! I love your vocals - the background/harmonies are wonderful. The instrumentation is perfect for this. I don't know if I'd add anything to it! And I really like the lyrics and your subject choice. I think you should be proud of this piece of music - you did a fantastic job! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much for listening, really stoked that you enjoyed it. =) Maybe i will keep it that way, i like the idea of having a few different versions of one song... so maybe a remix will be in the future.
