Juli 1870. Mehr: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsch-Franz%C3%B6sischer_Krieg |
The reason for war: The possible ascension of a candidate from Prussia Prince Leopold of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen of the spanisch thrown was not an ideal situation for France. After the Prussian- Austrian war that led to a strong unity of the German states it was not tolerable for France to have a German Prince becoming the King of Spain facing the danger of beeing sourrounded by a possible enemy from the south west. The French required Wilhelm to renounce any possible further Hohenzollern candidature to the Spanish throne. Ambassor Benedetti (13.July 1870) was sent to Bad Ems to negotiate with Kaiser Wilhem I. Meanwhile Prince Leopold of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen had declared that he would not be the candidate for the thrown of Spain and the German Kaiser sent Benedetti away who resisted and the German Kaiser then told him to talk to his staff. The answers (The Ems Dispatch) to the demands of Napoleon III and France were given in an ungentle tone by Bismarck. Because of the answer beeing published in newspapers the French Emperor Napoleon III was outraged and the French mobilized and declared war on Prussiasa. This was the 19th of July 1870.
