Ouachita Mountains

The skies in the Ouachita Mountains in southeastern Oklahoma are filled with towering pines, making for lush, peaceful surroundings for nature lovers. The Talimena Scenic Drive, traversing the crest of the Winding Stair Mountain Range in the Ouachita National Forest, is one of the Sooner State's premier destinations for fall foliage - although you can certainly enjoy the view year-round! Beavers Bend Resort Park, adjacent to Broken Bow Lake, is a favorite spot for trout and fly fishing, boating, eagle watching, horseback riding and nature hikes. Other recreation areas in the region include the Glover River, the Kiamichi River and the Little River, as well as five other state parks.

  • Beavers Bend Resort Park - one of Oklahoma’s most popular resort areas, known for trout and fly fishing, boating, skiing, eagle watching, horseback riding, nature hikes
  • Talimena Scenic Drive is a 54-mile road that travels along the crest of the Winding Stair Mountain Range.
  • Ouachita National Forest - comprised of shortleaf pine savannas with scattered oaks and hickories, maples & sweetgum.
  • Lake Broken Bow - located at the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains.
  • Kiamichi Mountains - hidden in this heavily forested mountain range is Indian Mounds Camp, with 983,000 acres for riding and hiking.
  • McCurtain County Wilderness Area - includes white-tailed deer, coyote, bobcat, bats, as well as 110 species of birds including wild turkey, bobwhite quail, various raptors and woodpeckers
  • Buffalo Mountain near Talihina is a popular area for hang gliders
  • Choctaw Nation’s Capital Building (near Tuskahoma), erected in 1884
  • Antlers, "Deer Capital of the World", is a vacation spot for families, sportsmen and travelers
  • McGee Creek State Park - Featuring an extensive system of hiking/cycling/equestrian multi-use trails
  • Jackfork Mountains
  • Winding Stair Mountain National Recreation Area
  • Primary rivers: Kiamichi, Glover & Little River
  • Other Lakes and State Parks: Atoka Lake, Sardis Lake, Clayton Lake State Park, Talimena State Park, Hochatown State Park

Terrain Description:
 

The Ouachita Mountains ecoregion is made up of sharply defined ridges. Once covered by oak-hickory-pine forests, most of this region is now in loblolly and shortleaf pine.
