Zillebeke is the village at the foot of Hill 60. It contains a rarity in First and Second World War graveyards, in that it holds non-standard headstones. A great number of the burials in Zillebeke’s church grounds are of arisocrats. Early on in the war, before the Imperial War Graves Commission was up and running it was a rather ad hoc affair, with the richer dead able to be given a more lavish headstone. Once the commission began it’s work most graves were marked in the uniform manner that is now so widespread, but a few were left in their original places with the original markers. For this reason, Zillebeke is known as the Aristocrats Cemetery.

Just over the railway bridge from Hill 60 lies Caterpillar Crater. This picturesque site is hidden away down a little path, and in the middle of a small copse of trees. It’s well worth the walk.
