Second Life crew

Vodafone heeft een service gelanceerd waarbij Second Life gebruikers met hun mobiele telefoon kunnen bellen (+sms) naar een kennis in de virtuele wereld van Second Life. Omgekeerd kan het ook , dankzij een speciaal ontworpen HUD kan u een contact - persoon selecteren en deze opbellen vanuit Second Life. U hoeft niets vrij te geven van persoonlijke informatie , het telefoonnummer van uw mobieltje blijft strikt geheim.

Vodafone InsideOut lets you live both your real life and virtual life to the full. Instead of having to choose between worlds, keep your second life and real life connected through your mobile.

Met InsideOut wordt de grens tussen Second Life en real-life terug een stuk kleiner , de service is gebruiksvriendelijk en tot eind november gratis. Zoals eerder vermeld werkt het systeem aan de hand van een Head-up display :

You can use the HUD to call other Second Life avatars, and Vodafone will connect the call to your real mobile, with your virtual identities intact. Even when your Second Life friends are offline you can call them when you’re online. Equally, when you’re offline, you can make and receive calls from your real mobile, as your avatar (your HUD rings first and you can then choose whether or not to accept the call).

Naast telefoneren is het ook mogelijk om text messaging (sms) te doen :

You can also use your HUD to send private messages to friends in-world, and if they’re offline, they’ll receive your message on their real life mobile as an SMS. When you’re offline, you can send and receive texts using your virtual identity on your real life mobile.

Sommige gebruikers blijven liever anoniem of geven niet graag persoonlijke informatie vrij , Vodafone hield hiermee rekening door een systeem van unieke nummers te creëren;

To call other Second Life users, you don’t need to give out your real phone number. All you have to do is add their avatar name to your contacts, and we’ll provide you with a unique number just for calls and texts between the two of you. So you can shoot the breeze with the cybergoth you just met, whilst knowing that your privacy is always protected.

Geïntresseerden kunnen een HUD verkrijgen op het eiland InsideOut van Vodafone. Om de dienst te activeren moet u het telefoonnummer van uw mobieltje registreren waarna u een ‘ activatie SMS ‘ zal ontvangen. De service is momenteel nog in een betaversie (trial) waardoor Vodafone de klanten niet kan garanderen dat de dienst blijft bestaan. Het project werd ontwikkeld door Rivers Run Red.

Volgens Justing Bovingtong , CEO van RRR kunnen we momenteel spreken van een ‘ Second Wave’ : “The link between the first world an second world is coming together. This is wat we’re calling the ’second wave’ of projects coming into Second Life - a move towards brands developing compelling,relevant and immersive technology applications for the virtual worlds”… ( denk aan Keytrade, IBM , Cisco , Intel enz…).
