Narnia's Prince Caspian to Start in January

While the first Chronicles of Narnia, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, was shot in snowy New Zealand, the second installment, Prince Caspian, will likely shoot in the forests of Europe this coming January, says producer Mark Johnson. Set for release in summer 2008, the four stars of the movie will be 2 1/2 years older, but luckily, after Prince Caspian the two older siblings, Peter and Susan, disappear. (Just as well, I prefer Edmund and Lucy anyway.) Andrew Adamson is returning as writer-director for the second Narnia installment. A year after that he and Johnson will reteam to produce Voyage of the Dawn Treader, my favorite Narnia book, which includes a boy who turns into a dragon.

'Narnia' Oscar-winner Tired of Gore

Berger_lane_1 The Times of London has an interview with practical makeup effects artist Howard Berger, owner of KNB Effects, and an Oscar-winner (with Tami Lane) for "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe."

The Times misspells Stan Winston's name (Winstone anyone?) but Berger answers the paper's questions with his trademark candor:

The Times/London: Does horror still excite you?
Berger: Actually, I’m tired of doing all the gore stuff. You can only kill somebody in so many ways. There was a period last year when everybody was getting their Achilles tendons sliced. The first one we did was in Kill Bill, which was great. But then it came up in Hostel and we tried to talk Eli Roth (the director) out of doing it again.

Next up from Berger is Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's two-part horror film(s) "Grind House."

Narnia's Lion Beats Kong

Neat, well-crafted, disciplined and family-friendly two hours does better than passionate, fabulous, messy and indulgent three hours. And so? (Obsessing about who's number one is part of what's wrong with this business and its media coverage.) Plenty of people enjoyed both movies, although they didn't do well enough to pull the boxoffice out of its slump. As expected, the total was about 5 percent down from last year.

Next Narnia Chronicles

Assuming that all goes well with installment number one, "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe," for the next "Narnia," producer Mark Johnson was hoping to film the C.S. Lewis prequel "The Magician's Nephew." But in order to follow his young cast as they grow, "Harry Potter"-style, he'll probably proceed with "Prince Caspian," followed by "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader." That Narnia adventure not only features the four young leads on the high seas, but a nasty piece of business named Eustace who turns into a dragon. Cool stuff.
