Chile elects new leader Late president's son wins big

SANTIAGO, Chile -- Eduardo Frei, the candidate for the governing center-left coalition, won a landslide victory in yesterday's presidential election, according to official returns covering nearly half of the vote.

Returns covering 48.19 percent of the estimated 8 million votes cast gave Frei 57.37 percent. Arturo Alessandri, the candidate for the rightist opposition, had 24.65 percent.
